This is in sharp contrast with some restaurants in Hong Kong restricting the dining duration or even playing tricks to make customers leave earlier for more business. Consuming in the mainland thus exerts pressure on the local retail industry. In addition, the China Tourism Academy under the Ministry of Culture and Tourism released a survey report last week pointing out that for the first time outbound travellers rated Macau as the most satisfactory destination, whereas Hong Kong dropped from the fifth place last year to the seventh. The report came as a surprise to Hong Kong, with some questioning how the index was calculated. However, Macau has always been friendly to mainland visitors to win their favour. When they enjoyed better-than-expected experience, they would give a higher satisfaction score. Whether Hongkongers accept the survey result or not, it is undoubtedly a wake-up call that there is a need to step up efforts to improve hospitality and change their perception. The service industry should capitalize on the campaign to enhance staff training and encourage them to wear a smile while saying "thank you" more often. They have to take the perspective of the customers and make some well-intentioned suggestions to be more considerate and hospitable. With such good experience and impression, visitors will spend more, thereby polishing the Hong Kong brand and making them revisit. Hospitality should cover not only tourists but also the general public. Only then can they be attracted to spend in Hong Kong. Strict enforcement to combat swindling Courtesy is the focus of the campaign while the authorities regard it as a routine. They are determined to start with education. Through promotions in schools, students will learn to treat others with courtesy in their daily life. Hopefully, when they encounter tourists asking for directions, they will come forward to help. Meanwhile, community activities in all 18 districts encourage more youngsters to act as tourism volunteers while sharing their knowledge on various themes.
