The US 104 per cent tariffs on Chinese goods officially took effect on April 9, while China strongly retaliated with 50 to 84 per cent increases without backing down at all. It sees through US President Donald Trump's motives of going beyond eliminating the so-cal led "trade deficit". His true intention to suppress China's national revival has become increasingly apparent. For China, therefore, this is truly a "battle of national destiny" - one with no room for compromise and must be fought to the end. Trump's daring tariff wars against more than 180 countries show just how confident he is in his country. In recent days, a few smaller nations have indeed surrendered as expected. But for the EU, Canada, and especially China, surrender is simply not an option. Trump said, "China wants badly to make a deal." But he clearly underestimated Beijing's determination. Just think about it: the first war fought by the People's Republic of China was the Korean War. Back then, the country was impoverished and underdeveloped, yet it showed no fear against the powerful US military. Today, as the world's second-largest economy, there is no reason at all for yielding. Beijing has no reason to surrender Of course, China has not completely ruled out negotiations. It will, however, never accept a humiliating treaty. Any agreement must be reached through equal dialogue - a stance made clearly in the State Council Information Office's white paper released on the same day. That said, Beijing is fully aware of Trump's habit - backtracking. So even if a deal is reached, there is no guarantee he will not break it later on some pretext. Is China capable of fighting a protracted war? Absolutely. It is the world' s largest industrial nation, home to the biggest middle class. More importantly, it no longer relies on the US market as heavily as before with diversified export destinations. So it is not at a disadvantage in this epic tariff battle. On the other hand, the US manufacturing sector shrinks drastically while domestically produced goods are increasingly rare. Once US consumers lose access to affordable & high-quality Chinese imports, their quality of life will inevitably decline. More critically, China holds a large amount of US debt. If Beijing offloads it (as rumours have suggested), it will drive up US bond yields, making future debt auctions far more expensive - something the US can scarcely bear. So it is not equipped for a prolonged war and lacks the societal resilience that China possesses. According to official Chinese media, China still holds many cards. Domestically, it can lower interest rates and reserve requirements to stimulate investment and consumption, thereby shifting some of the external demand lost to tariffs back home. The domestic market potent ial should not be underes t imated, especially the more aggressive the US gets the stronger the patriotism among the Chinese (as seen in numerous online expressions of support). The market force can be tremendous. Externally, since Trump has declared a global war, almost every country becomes a victim overnight. This creates an incentive for them to band together in "opposition", which in turn presents an opportunity for China to find allies. President Xi Jinping's upcoming visits to three Southeast Asian countries aim at uniting nations affected by Trump's moves. The EU, traditionally part of the Western bloc , has recent l y begun di scus s ions on possibly "reviving" the long-stalled Sino-EU Comprehensive Investment Agreement - all thanks to the US. With its natural edges and strategic deployments at home and abroad, China is well-positioned for a long fight - and these will only expand. Trump seeks to make America great again, but so do the Chinese yearn for the great rejuvenation of their nation.
